Blogging can be a great way to start your own business. We have several posts on here telling you how to write certain types of posts, how to decide your niche, and how to get the perfect hosting.
But what is blogging? It started in 1997 with a website created by student Justin Hall. He just wanted somewhere to put his writing. Wikipedia says that blogging as a term was created to reflect the process of “logging the web” and then Weblog was shortened to blog in 1999 by a computer programmer.
The basic premise of blogging hasn’t really changed much since then. Most people initially start a blog as a place to share their thoughts. Your blog can be as personal or as anonymous as you want. There are a lot of smaller blogs out there that aren’t even for public viewing, and are just for the person who has written it. Writing is a very therapeutic thing to do, and personal blogs are a great way of getting your feelings out.
However, as time has passed, blogs and websites are now a great way to make some extra money, or even a full time income if you work hard enough. You can use your skills in other areas to write about things you know about. If you are an avid reader, why not write book reviews? Are you getting married? Do a wedding blog! If you use search engine optimisation you will eventually rank on google searches, and other people will read your reviews. You can then monetise your blog by providing links to Amazon, for instance. This type of monetisation is possible in all niches. For instance on this blog, I could have links to great e-books that will help you learn how to go about your new business. You would get a great deal, and I would get a little affiliate income. (Note to self – find some great e-books!)
Blogging has also expanded into the world of influencers. Really popular influencers that you see on Instagram probably started with a blog. Once you have a blog, you need to decide if you want it to be an influencer blog. For example, this blog probably isn’t an influencer blog. It has useful information and great articles, but its not influencing anyone to try particular products. However, top blogs like TobyandRoo and lots of others started by blogging but now have a massive following on Instagram. Instagram can be a very profitable place! Other bloggers like Dustin Ramsdell started with a great blog, and now has podcasts and much much more.
Social media is now key for all influencer bloggers – this can be Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest or Tiktok, and several more. Its a good idea to keep up to date with trends – marketing strategies change all the time and you need to make sure you are up there with the best. Don’t buy followers. Try to use your social media as honestly and organically as you can, so that people come to you naturally.
Now you know you want to start blogging as a business – get thinking of your niche idea and start writing. Good luck!
